Apologies if I've asked this before. I honestly cannot remember.

I was driving today, and I noticed a sign for a Baptist church not far from where I live. It's name caught my eye and I was wondering if someone here can explain the meaning of the title.

It was called a Upson Primitive Baptist Church. (Upson is the county where the church was located and I know what a Baptist church is. It's the 'Primitive' part I don't get.)

Can anyone explain or point me to this information?

Thanks,
Goon

I thought I knew what Baptist were, until I found out how many "flavours" there are in the world. American, Independent, Southern, Missionary, Primitive and a few more that I can't recall.

So, Primitive is a "sub-denomination" (for lack of a better term) of Baptists, then. Alright. Thanks, Chotock. I'll do some more research with this as a jumping off point.

Apparently "Primitive" Baptist was the original Baptist....Til some guy name Fuller came by and started a Baptist "reformation". "Missionary" Baptists following Fuller, broke off and ended up becoming the mainline branch.

Looks like Primitive Baptist doctrine is full on predestination/election.

Yep. That's what my research has borne out, as well.

ok as you all know I am so far from being versed in doctrine aside from the basics but is this in any relation to calvanism at least the extreme form of calvanism?
